Analysis of ‘The Exorcism’

Analysis of ‘The Exorcism’

Representation:
* The girl is shown wearing a white dress showing purity and innocence. She also has blonde hair which is a generic convention for horror film and also creates innocence.
* Victim also shown as villain – possessed, hair covers face suggesting mystery.
* The girl’s father doesn’t appear a lot in the trailer, however when he is, he looks like a caring father but however looks like an easy target. He makes you care about the daughter and father because they seem close.
* Cat- Superstitions, the two are linked, girl and cat. Wild nature.  Made to look animalistic. White cat, reflecting pure.
* Reverend – dress is professional
* Location – simple, rural ‘could happen to anyone’

Sound:
* Music heard in a church which connects with religion
* The religious music then stops and then makes a low bang noise; The non diagetic sound which sounds to be the reverend  ‘if you believe in god then you have to believe in the devil’.
* Low drumming sounds, representing heartbeat, making you tense. Building up tension as the trailer goes on.
* When she becomes possessed, high pitch noises sound out.
* She laughs so suggests that the devil is enjoying what is happening.
* Diagetic sounds enhancing the breaking of her bones
* Low pitch bang when text comes in which draws our attention.
* Fast bangs speed up the trailer and create a more tense atmosphere.
* A lot of sounds to create tension.
* Non-diagetic, Narrator at the beginning of the trailer telling a story.
* Scratching sounds – Knives of nails scratching on glass. These sounds can make people feel very uncomfortable.
* Diagetic – Breathing of the girl to show how distressed she is.

Camera:
* Establishing shots to show the location – showing vulnerability making us feel sorry for the characters in the house.
* Rural location
* Rough camera work – not quite hand held, point of view shot. Uncertainty of fear.
* Obscure camera shots to make us feel uncomfortable
* Point of view shots to make you feel like you are actually there.
* A lot of shots to frame to look through a door, so you’re not just looking at them in the room.
* Documentary feel- real life. Making you feel like you’re with them.
* Close up shots of faces – limiting of what we can see. Rapid cuts. Glimpse of action.
* Panning – looking at the house through the car. Point of views. You are the person within the scene making it scarier.
